#20 Askaway

Reference desks are no longer the only places where our patrons can ask our librarians questions.

NVDPL participates in Askaway, the online chat reference service supported by the Government of British Columbia and libraries across BC. Both public and academic libraries are involved in the program. Each library contributes a certain number of hours on a set schedule during which times their librarians monitor Askaway and answer questions.

Patrons select their library or academic institution before they ask a question so that they can be directed to either the public or academic librarians who are waiting online. The librarian who answers their question may be based anywhere in the province. Currently, public librarians are available Sunday through Thursday, from 10am-10 pm and Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm.

Discovery Resources:
Discovery Exercise:
  1. Go to Askaway, and ask a librarian a question. If you've been trained in Askaway, you've probably already done this, so skip to #2.
  2. Write a blog entry about your experience with online chat reference, either asking or answering questions. You might want to think about your perceptions about the program or software itself, or how you feel about this kind of online interaction.
